Jesus’ Question for You

“Who do you say I am?” – Matthew 16:15

Some years ago Christian writer C. S. Lewis pointed out that there are only four possible conclusions you can reach about Jesus. Either He was a liar, or He was self-deceived, or He was insane—or He was in fact who He claimed to be: the Son of God.

Which was He? The only logical conclusion is that Jesus was the Son of God. A liar couldn’t have taught the lofty moral principles He did. A self-deceived person couldn’t have performed the miracles He did. A lunatic couldn’t have held up under pressure the way Jesus did. After closely observing His life every day, His disciples reached their conclusion: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).

But there is an even more compelling reason to believe that Jesus was who He claimed to be: His resurrection from the dead. In all of human history, only one Person came back from the grave; Jesus Christ “was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:4). Who do you say He is?

  1. How do you answer people who state that Lazarus also came back from the dead after three days, and that the Bible states after the resurrection of Christ other persons came back to life?

  2. Hi Lynne,
Thank you for sharing this question with me. I am no expert, and don’t claim to be but my response is this: Lazarus and all of the others who have been raised from the dead were raised by the power of the Holy Spirit… of God. In the case of Lazarus, Jesus went to him and with the spirit of God empowering Him called Lazarus fourth “Lazarus, Get up!” John 11:38-44 – Jesus was also resurrected by the power of God… the big difference in Jesus’ resurrection and everyone else who has been raised from the dead is that Jesus is still alive today! He is the only one who was resurrected and remains so. When Jesus left this earth it was not because He died… God took him from this earth. He ascended into heaven still very much alive. Acts 1:9 Now today, we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to do even greater works than he (john 14:12)… if someone is raised from the dead it is by the power of the Holy Spirit working through us… we are his vessels… but that person will eventually die again.

Thanks again… this was a wonderful comment/question. It challenged me to dig deep inside not just relying on what I’ve always known and believed to be truth but to really articulate a response. I welcome any more feedback/comments/questions Lynne! Blessings! Krissy
